I-820/SH 121 interchange

The portion of I-820 to be reconstructed is described in two segments. The north segment extends from the northern I-820/SH 121/SH 183 interchange south to Trinity Boulevard. The existing roadway along this segment includes up to four northbound and five southbound general purpose main lanes with discontinuous frontage roads varying from two to three lanes in each direction. The proposed project would reconstruct this segment to include up to five northbound and six southbound general purpose main lanes, in addition to auxiliary lanes. The proposed project would also include one managed toll lane in each direction and continuous frontage roads that would vary from one to three lanes in each direction along this segment. The south segment extends between Trinity Boulevard to Randol Mill Road. The existing roadway along this segment includes two general purpose main lanes in each direction. The proposed project would reconstruct this segment to include five general purpose main lanes each direction. 

The existing roadway of SH 121, from I-820 to Handley-Ederville Road, varies from two to three general purpose main lanes each direction and includes continuous frontage roads consisting of two lanes in each direction. The proposed project would reconstruct this segment of SH 121 to include three general purpose main lanes in each direction, one managed toll lane in each direction and continuous frontage roads varying from one to three lanes in each direction.

Along I-820 the existing right of way width typically varies from 350 feet to 400 feet and along SH 121 the existing right of way width typically varies from 347 feet to 373 feet. The proposed project would include the existing right of way and would require approximately 23 acres of new right of way and approximately 0.025 acres of easements.  The amount of additional right of way that would be required for the project varies up to a typical width of approximately 238 feet along I-820 and up to a width of 7 feet along SH 121.  Additional widths of up to approximately 50 feet would be required along Trinity Boulevard and up to approximately 25 feet would be required along Handley‑Ederville road near the north intersection with SH 121.   The proposed project would displace three commercial structures. Relocation assistance is available for displaced persons and businesses.

The proposed project crosses the West Fork Trinity River and Calloway Branch, occurs within a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designated 100-year floodplain and is within the Trinity River Corridor Development Regulatory Zone.
