Jury Cases

Jury Service Cases heard by the Richland Hills Municipal Court are Class C misdemeanor violations that are punishable by fine only. Jurors are selected from a random list of registered voters.

A Person may claim an exemption from jury duty if that person:

  • Is over 70 years of age
  • Has legal custody of a child/children under 15 years of age, and jury service would require leaving the child without adequate supervision
  • Is a student of a public or private secondary school
  • Is enrolled and in attendance at an institution of higher learning
  • Is the primary care taker of an invalid who is unable to care for himself
  • Is a member of the U.S. military forces serving on active duty and deployed to a location away from home and out of the county of residence

These exemptions are not mandatory and an individual who meets one or more of these criteria may serve on a jury panel. If you wish to claim an exemption, you must send proof of your reason to Richland Hills Municipal Court by the date on your juror summons.

What to Expect on the Day of Jury Service

  • Check in at the Municipal Court window
  • Bring your juror information sheet
  • Work excuses will be issued at the time you check in
  • Trials typically last a half day
  • Proper dress is required
  • The courtroom is cool so please bring a light jacket in case you get cold
  • No drinks are allowed in the courtroom
  • There will be a wait from the time you check in until the trial(s) start so feel free to bring reading material
  • You will be given restroom breaks
